2009 International Awards

The 2009 International Awards for Nursing Excellence recognizes achievements in the fields of technology, media, chapter excellence, research and leadership. Award recipients will be honored at the honor society's 40th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on 31 October - 4 November 2009.

Deadline for entries: Submission deadline is 5 March 2009 (11:59 PM EST).
Exceptions: Chapter Key Award has a 15 July 2009 (11:59 PM EDT) deadline and Helen Henry Award online nomination process begins 1 October and has a 15 November 2009 (11:59 PM EST) deadline.

Entry Fee: Each award submission requires a US$50 entry fee. Except for Helen Henry Award submission which has no entry fee. Entries can be submitted in more than one category but each submission requires the US$50 entry fee. Entry fees are non-refundable.

NOTE: The fee structure for members outside the U.S. will be set according to World Bank classifications based on per capita income designated as low, middle and high. All fees paid to Headquarters, either by individual members or chapters, will be calculated in U.S. currency. The fee structure will be determined by the nominator's residence. The fee structure for the Founders Awards will be based on the first nominator's residence.

Sliding Scale for the 2009 International Award Entry Fees

High Income* = US$50
Middle Income* = US$20
Low Income* = US$10

* These fee categories are based on country GNI for 2006 per World Bank. Effective until July 2008.

Eligibility: Membership is not a qualification for all awards. Members of the Honor Society of Nursing board of directors or staff are ineligible. Award criteria provide additional information. Self-nominations are accepted.

Submission Requirements:

  • All award entries and supporting materials must be submitted via this online submission system. (Follow the hyperlinks on this page). Hard copies sent through the mail will NOT be accepted.
  • Submissions may be uploaded in the following file types:
    • TXT - Plain Text
    • HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language, Web pages
    • PDF - Adobe’s Portable Document format
    • GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF - Formats commonly used on the web
    • RTF - Rich text file (most word processors export this format)
    • DOC - Microsoft Word
    • WMV, WMA, MOV, WAV, AIFF - Multimedia formats
    • Hard copies of supporting materials will NOT be accepted.

  • Submissions should NOT exceed 10 MB.
  • Award entries must be in English.
  • All communication regarding the award nomination will be sent to a designated primary contact. A valid e-mail address is required for all submitters.
  • Once you begin a submission, you will receive an e-mail giving you the submission ID# and password. These can be used if you need to access your submission at any time in the future. The ID# and password will also be helpful if there are any problems with your submission.
  • Once the deadline (5 March 2009) for submitting an award nomination has passed, an e-mail will be sent from Sigma Theta Tau International to confirm receipt of the award submission.
  • Only complete submissions will be judged. Submissions that are incomplete after the deadline will be withdrawn from the system and will NOT be reviewed.

Group Entries: The following information of all contributors to a group entry will be requested through the online submission process: name, credentials, professional title, affiliation, member id number, chapter name, region, preferred mailing address, phone number (home and office) and email. All communications will be through the designated primary contact. It is the primary contact's responsibility to communicate award information to fellow study contributors.

Judging: Qualified judging panels representing strong talent and expertise are appointed.

Notification: Recipients will be notified by email of the judges' decisions by 1 July 2009. Primary contact will be the only person receiving communication from headquarters. The primary contact is responsible for notifying all team members and co-recipients. Exception: Notification for the Chapter Key Award will occur by 17 September 2009.

Convention Registration, Travel and related Expenses:

Individual and group recipients receive only one complimentary registration as defined below. Award recipients will be responsible for all travel and related expenses incurred for convention attendance unless indicated below.

  • Audrey Hepburn, Clinical Scholarship, Daniel J. Pesut Spirit of Renewal, Media, Research and Technology award recipients receive one complimentary registration for the day of the award presentation and one complimentary meal ticket for the award meal function.
  • Episteme and Melanie C. Dreher Outstanding Dean award recipients receive one complimentary registration for the day of the award presentation. Meal tickets can be purchased separately.
  • Virginia K. Saba Nursing Informatics Leadership Award recipient receives travel and full convention registration funded by the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing. One complimentary meal ticket for the award meal function is also provided.
  • Founders Award recipients and Honorary Members receive full complimentary registration for any part of the convention and one complimentary meal ticket for the award meal function. Chapters receiving the Ethel Palmer Clarke Award for Excellence in Chapter Programming will receive two complimentary registrations, including award meal function tickets.

Presentation: All awards will be presented at the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International 40th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, on 31 October – 4 November 2009. Specific award presentation information will be mailed to each recipient. Group recipients receive only one award; however, additional awards can be ordered at the group’s expense.

Chapter Key Award Form

All nominations for the Chapter Key Award are required to download and complete the "Chapter Key Award Form" (Excel spreadsheet). Once the document is completed by the Chapter, they will be required to upload the file on the "Supporting Material" step of the online submission process for their nomination. Please note, without the Chapter Key Award Form, the nomination will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. The Chapter Key Award form is the only supporting material required for a Chapter Key Award nomination. Chapters may upload other documentation to support answers in the Chapter Key form.

Please note the downloadable Excel spreadsheet is password protected. Chapters will only be able to enter information into the allowed fields. To download the required Chapter Key Award Form, simply right-click on the "Chapter Key Award form" link and then select "Save as" or "Save Target as" and then save the file to your computer. We recommend saving the file with the name "chaptername_cka2009.xls"
